Today’s song comes courtesy Revs. She wanted Inji iduppazhagi from Devar Magan. Can there be a more romantic song than this?!

One more song to prove that Raja is God. No one else could have come up with such a genius composition. Also, the choice of singers – work of a sheer genius. Kamal Hassan, in an interview said, if he had been a full time Tamil film musician he would’ve killed Ilayaraja for he wouldn’t want a competitor of Raja’s caliber. Ilaiyaraja, in 1992, was a strong contender for the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Thevar Magan, which he eventually lost to A. R. Rahman.

The song “Inji Iduppazhagi” is based on Jonpuri raga and the tune is said to be inspired from Hindi song “Yeh Dil Deewana” composed by S. D. Burman for the film Ishq Par Zor Nahin. Inspired as in not copied; but inspired probably ‘cos of the Jonpuri raga. Here – listen to SD Burman’s song and decide for yourself.

And, about Kamal saar.. he isn’t a mean musical talent either. His voice lends a lot of nativity to this song in particular. It’s a pity he hasn’t sung many songs. This song is one of the very few songs of Janaki that I love. That too, the initial humming which comes from the most gorgeous Revathi. Actually, make that charanam too. Hey, the entire song is a such a treat to listen to.

And Vali. This man had a big barrel of romance as stock within him and kept giving it out as and when asked for.
